There's plenty of reasons why we should shop second-hand, but Hanions don't need to be told. Secondhand is normality in Vietnam, with mall retailers largely considered too expensive and uninteresting for older generations and younger streetwear enthusiasts alike. 

If you look closely past the fake Gucci and ridiculous bling fashion culture you'll find a youth obsessed with brands like Stussy and Burberry, with a heavy influence from 1990s and 00s vintage culture.

Chợ Đông Tác market, Đống Đa

Around a ten minute drive south from the Old Quarter:

Probably one of the biggest second-hand clothing markets in Asia, Cho Dong Tac is the British equivalent of a hundred car-boot sales crammed together to create a concrete jungle of vintage threads. Barter yourself through the endless alleys of imported second-hand bales from mostly Korea and Japan to find anything from jewellery, bags and racks on racks of tees and sweatshirts.

In winter, you're almost guaranteed to find a North Face nuptse puffer jacket. In summer, expect to find piles of vintage football shirts from the 90s.

Expect to pay around 100k / £3 for a t-shirt and 200k / £6 for a jacket or bag. If you're offered upwards of 500k, always try to barter down.

Yên Phụ, West Lake  (Tây Hồ)

Fancy heading out of Old Quarter and visit the expat district of Hanoi, Tay ho?

This area is a hotspot for some of the best vintage stores in the city, and all are a 5-10 minute walk from each-other. When you have finished with shopping, take a walk to Vu Mien street on the beautiful Yen Phu island for a sunset drink at Mystic Coffee. 

Super Na$ty Vintage, Yên Phụ

One of the more high end and oldest vintage shops with an array of hip-hop inspired 90s and 00s clothes and accessories with those 90s brands like Kangol, Fubu and Karl Kani. Expect to pay premium prices for their collection of grails which is second to none with racks dedicated to rare pieces like Avirex, Nike ACG, Fendi and even a cabinet full of Polo Sport and Polo Bear. 

There's also plenty of cheaper items like Tommy, Nautica, Nike, Ralph Lauren and USA vintage on offer at Nasty.

Vintage Stadium, Yên Phụ

Vintage Stadium can be found on the main Yen Phu road and is jam-packed full of bargains. Look through tonnes of colorful tees and shorts and find plenty of vintage denim to choose from. The occasional grail and rare item can compliment some excellent priced summer basics.

PhaseTwo Thrift Shop, Yên Phụ

Next door to Vintage Stadium, check out PhaseTwo Thrift Shop. This vintage store has so many vintage tees and trousers on display, if you're looking for a pair of Dickies trousers then have a gander. The back section of the shop caters to rarer items like Stussy and Burberry.

Fre$h by Mountain, Yên Phụ

After visiting Na$ty and Vintage Stadium you can continue the Yen Phu thrift journey at Fre$h by Mountain. It's easy to find, just look for a road absolutely covered in graffiti near the main roundabout. The owner, Mountain, doubles as a vinyl hip-hop DJ and can be found at Standing Bar on a Friday night, with an array of craft beers and a very decent g&t.

You can find some good bargains here with some great pieces and even a small collection of vinyl records. They have a big collection of vintage tees, basketball jerseys and some nice USA retro gear like Karl Kani and Stussy. The graffiti on the opposite side of the road is an excellent photo opportunity also.

Makaw, Yên Phụ

Next-door to Fresh by Mountain, Makaw is an excellent store to update your wardrobe with a mixture of modern deadstock and brand-new-with-tags items. You can also find loads of vintage pieces like The North Face and Nike to mix things up. Theres lots of accessories like caps and snapbacks including deadstock Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy. 

My best pickup was a deadstock Carhartt sweatshirt for only 500k (£16).

 

Fresh from Hanoi, Yên Hoa, Yên Phụ

Take a walk down Yen Hoa by the lake road towards Yen Phu island and you can find Fresh from Hanoi, full of vintage gems with a streetwear/hiphop style. 

My favourite cop from FFHN was a pair of vintage Gramicci shorts. 

If you keep walking and turn right, find Na$ty Vintage. Turn left and go onto the main road and find Vintage Stadium.

Hieu Secondhand, Cầu Giấy

A little out of the way of the expat epicentre of Tay Ho, Hieu Secondhand is definitely worth the 15 minute drive. They have a teasing back-wall full of not-for-sale 90s Burberry and Fendi clobber with a collection of Prada, Gucci and Dior bags. I always find something special for a bargain price here, with my best purchase involving 2 Prada bags for around 1.5m / £50 each and some 90s football shirts for 500k / £16 each.

They also do a sneaker cleaning service and sometimes blast out UK grime on their massive speakers.
